Kiawah Island SC Living Essentials
Life's Essentials Available To Owners Of Kiawah Island Real Estate
Accessing Kiawah Island
The seclusion of living on a barrier island means that access to the Charleston area’s major highways is several miles away. Such is the case with living on Kiawah Island, which is about 15 miles south of Highway 17, one of the Charleston area’s major arteries. Fortunately, Charleston Executive Airport located on neighboring Johns Island provides convenient air transportation for business and vacation travelers.
Medical Care
The diverse medical needs of Kiawah Island real estate owners are met by the staff of the Medical University Hospital of the Medical University of South Carolina. Located in historic downtown Charleston, the Charleston hospital specialties include neurology, cardiology, infectious diseases, pulmonary and critical care medicine, radiology, urology and nine surgical specialties. MUSC sits at the heart of an impressive medical complex in peninsular Charleston, which includes Roper Hospital, The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, and Charleston Country Hospital. Roper St. Francis Healthcare, which operates Roper Hospital, provides diagnostic services at its facility at 345 Freshfields Drive, just outside the Kiawah Island entrance. A number of physicians, including specialists, maintain offices on nearby Johns Island.
Libraries
Charleston County Public Library operates the Johns Island Regional Library. Opened in 2004, this 16,000 square foot library is the largest of the five regional libraries. The facility includes an auditorium and small conference room. The library’s holdings include 35,000 volumes, DVDs, videos, books on cassette, books on CD, and music on CD. About 40 computers are available there for use by library visitors.
Education
The Charleston area is home to several outstanding colleges and universities. They include the Medical University of South Carolina, The Citadel, Charleston School of Law, the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern University. Trident Technical College, with campuses in both North Charleston and downtown Charleston, offers a long list of continuing education opportunities for both Kiawah Island real estate owners and Charleston SC real estate owners in general.
Faith and Religion
No churches are located on Kiawah Island, but next door Johns Island is home to a number of small community churches of several denominations. Church options broaden for those willing to make the slightly longer journey into the City of Charleston.
